Stop wasting money on your cell phone

Hello friends,

My first post will hopefully help save you a tonne of money.  I have been helping out my friends and family with their cell phone plans, and now I want to help you as well.  If you want more info, write me at nicholashwong@gmail.com and we'll help you sort things out.

Example:

My cousin was paying for her and her fiance's cell phone.  Their monthly bill came to about $186 dollars.  Their plan was more complicated, but with a couple hours on the phone I was able to get them this:

250 daytime minutes, 2500 text messages, iphone caller ID, visual voicemail, etc. ($25)
1000 LD minutes that can also be used for roaming in Canada ($5)
500 mb data plan ($25)
evenings starting at 6 pm
government regulatory fee (~$2.50)

total for both came to $115, and since they were in BC it was approximately $128 with taxes.

Over a three year term that would save them $186-$128 = $58 for 36 months = $2088 dollars.  That's definitely not chump change.

Anyone can do this.  What you need is the ability to be polite, haggle a little and be willing to try and try again until you get what you want.  Or you need to email me and we can help you out.

The basic principal is that with Rogers, Telus, and the other big companies the "deals" you get on plans are not really deals, but what they would like you to pay.  The only way to get the plan I quoted above is to call them and tell them you would like to cancel your contract.  Only then will you be able to speak with the customer RETENTION department that has access to all of these plans.

Once you are there you need to decide what features you want and how much you'd like to pay.  You will save immediately as all new plans do away with the system access fee of approximately $7-8 per month.  After that it depends on your needs.  My favorite options are:

-1000 minutes of Long Distance per month ($5-10 per month depending on where you live).  This allows you to call anyone in canada and roam anywhere in Canada for free

-unlimited incoming calls (free to $5 per month) - this allows you to minimize your daytime minutes by getting others to call you.  Combine this with an iPhone app like Fonolo and you're all set (I'll write more about this another time)

-Evenings starting at 6 pm (free to $5 per month) - with most retention plans you can get this for free

If you're thinking this sounds like a lot of work, you're definitely not alone.  I have your solution.  If you have a plan that costs more than $80 per month and would like to pay less, email me at nicholashwong@gmail.com and I can call for you to cut your plan down to size.  It won't cost you a thing, and as you can see it will save you a lot of money over the long run.  As I help more people I'll get them to post their success stories so that you'll realize how legitimate this is and get on board.  Most of you reading this will be a friend of a friend, so ask them for their opinion.  I want you to save money.

Lastly, I thought I should share my own plan.  I am lucky enough to have gotten it while there was still the fantastic data plans available:

300 daytime minutes
unlimited incoming calls
1000 minutes long distance
evenings at 6 pm
all iphone options (caller ID, visual voicemail, conference call, etc.)
6 gb data per month
tethering data to computer

I get all this for $80, taxes and all fees included.  (NOTE: this does require a new three year contract, but since my plan is perfect for me I don't mind at all)

  1. ...or you could admit that cellphones are an unnecessary luxury and pay $10 a month for a VoIP home phone instead. No haggling required. ;)

  2. Haha - I'm reading a book called "Enough" that agrees with you - I'm thinking more that if I could have the ipad with the 3g data then I might not need my cell phone all the time either - I like having access to info now but I don't need to be available all the time!

  3. Well, that certainly sounds great! Probably will only need your assistance for Ben's phone as he will need it for work. I would prefer a pay as you go texting or a cheap plan for mostly texting!?
We'll probably get your assistance when we move back to Ontario.
    Thanks Doctor Nic!
